A place in the knockout stage is on the line as both sides can advance from Group D with a win.
Hailed as one of the dark-horse squads that could make a deep run, Denmark faces a must-win in its final group stage match.
The Danes put the world on notice when they made it all the way to the semifinals at Euro 2020. But they put out a tepid performance in a scoreless draw vs. Tunisia and were robbed of a point vs. France by a late winner from Kylian Mbappé. They now head into the group stage finale having scored just once.
The Socceroos picked up a critical three points against Tunisia despite conceding possession for much of the contest. But they, too, have struggled with the final product, amassing just 1.1 expected goals (xG) in their first two matches in Qatar.
For Australia, a win would mean automatic qualification for the round of 16—something only achieved once in its history, in 2006—and a draw would likely do as well, barring a shock victory by Tunisia over France. For Denmark, it needs a win, and potentially also a Tunisia loss, to avoid being a surprise omission from the knockout stage.
