Connor Bedard was ruled out of Friday’s showdown between the Chicago Blackhawks and New Jersey Devils after being on the receiving end of a big hit by Brendan Smith in the first period.
As Bedard crossed the blue line into the offensive zone, Smith delivered a high hit that struck Chicago’s young star around the jaw area.
Bedard skated to the bench holding his face—and proceeded to head immediately to the locker room.

Shortly after the start of the second period, the Blackhawks announced that Bedard was ruled out and would not return.
The 18-year-old rookie, who officially became the youngest player in NHL history to be named to the All-Star Game on Thursday, has been the lone bright spot in Chicago’s disappointing season. The Blackhawks own the second-fewest points (24) in the NHL with a 11–25–2 record.
Bedard leads the club with 15 goals and 18 assists (33 points) in 38 games.
