Aging stars are at the center of a 2018 last-16 rematch, with both eyeing a place in the knockout stage in 2022. Follow along here.
Some of the World Cup’s premier elder statesmen take center stage when Portugal meets Uruguay in Lusail, Qatar.
Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh off becoming the first men’s player to score in five World Cups, leads Portugal against Luis Suárez, Edinson Cavani, Diego Godín and Uruguay to cap Monday’s slate of matches. Portugal enters knowing it can secure its place in the knockout stage with a second straight win, while Uruguay’s fate won’t be sealed either way, regardless of the result, following its 0–0 draw vs. South Korea in their opening match.
Ronaldo’s penalty kick was just the start of a wild match vs. Ghana, in which Portugal was boosted by impact substitute forward Rafael Leão and a pair of assists two minutes apart from Bruno Fernandes in the 3–2 triumph.
This game is also a rematch of the round of 16 in 2018, when Uruguay eliminated Portugal on two goals from Cavani. Full revenge isn’t on offer Monday, but the result can still be rather influential in terms of each team’s prospects.
While Cavani did get the start for Uruguay, Suárez was left on the bench, with Darwin Núñez preferred by manager Diego Alonso, at least from the start.
