Christian Pulisic found the back of the net to give U.S. men’s national team a 1–0 lead over Iran in the team’s third and final group stage match.
Pulisic converted on a strike right in front of the goal, before colliding with Iran keeper Alireza Beiranvand. He is being evaluated for an injury in the moments after the goal.
The USMNT is looking to advance to the knockout stage after turning in draws against Wales and England. Iran’s upset victory over Wales last Friday greatly raised the stakes entering Tuesday as the Americans hoped to capitalize with a win in their final group stage match to move into first place in Group B.
After tallying two points in its first two matches, the USMNT has to beat Iran in order to advance to the knockout stage with a total of five points. However, because the United States went to a draw against England, the team would not advance if Tuesday’s match ends in a draw or loss to Iran.
As the finish to Iran-USA draws near, here’s a quick recap of the Group B standings entering the match:
1. England (4 points; plus-4 goal differential)
2. Iran (3 points; minus-2 goal differential)
3. USA (2 points; 0 goal differential)
4. Wales (1 point; minus-2 goal differential)
