Hoskins went down attempting to field a ground ball.
Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins was carted off the field during Thursday’s spring training game against the Tigers after falling down awkwardly while attempting to field a ground ball. Hoskins remained on the ground in pain for several minutes while being tended to by trainers.
The injury occurred just a week before Opening Day, making it particularly brutal timing for Hoskins and the Phillies.
The 30-year-old has spent his entire career with Philadelphia after being selected by the team in the fifth round of the 2014 draft. He debuted in ’17, finishing fourth in National League Rookie of the Year voting that season.
Last year, Hoskins batted .246/.332/.462 with 30 home runs and 79 RBIs across 156 games, setting a career high in hits (145) and helping lead the Phillies on a surprise run to the World Series. Hoskins hit four homers and drove in seven runs during Philadelphia’s NLCS win over the Padres, leading the team in both categories.
