The conversation surrounding the state of the Buccaneers after quarterback Tom Brady retired has been a hot-button topic all offseason. It’s also expected to continue well into the season, and after Tampa Bay’s first preseason game, wide receiver Mike Evans didn’t seem to love the constant idea of a rebuild being tossed around.
The Buccaneers are assumed by many to be in a rebuilding phase currently following Brady’s retirement. Tampa Bay won a Super Bowl title and made the playoffs every year with the legendary quarterback starting for them.
Evans doesn’t agree with this narrative and believes the Buccaneers are still in win-now mode.
“Rebuilding? We are just trying to win right now,” Evans said, via ESPN. “I don’t know why people don’t see that. Win the division, after that people can take care of themselves.”
Brady’s official successor has yet to be named as Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask remain in a quarterback battle for the starting position. Mayfield finished Friday preseason opener against the Steelers completing 8-of-9 passes for 63 yards and one touchdown, while Trask completed 6-of-10 passes for 99 yards and one interception.
Tampa Bay won the NFC South last season with an 8–9 record, but lost in the wild-card round to the Cowboys.
